We teach pure Jiu-Jitsu — and that’s by design.

There’s a unique beauty in what we don’t include. No striking, no katas, no flashy techniques that don’t work under pressure. Jiu-Jitsu is a complete system of self-defense, control, leverage, and strategy that’s been battle-tested for generations.

Am I too old to start Jiu-Jitsu?

Absolutely not. Our program is specifically designed for adults 35 and over who want to build strength, mobility, and confidence — without wrecking their joints or relying on athleticism. We focus on smart, sustainable training.

I'm out of shape. Will I be able to keep up?

Yes! You don’t need to “get in shape” before starting — Jiu-Jitsu is how you get in shape. We meet you where you are and progress at your pace, with a heavy focus on safety, structure, and consistency.

What if I have past injuries?

We understand how to work with your body — not against it. Our coaches specialize in intelligent training for longevity. We adjust for past injuries, prioritize mobility, and emphasize control over chaos.

Is this a fight gym or competition-focused?

No. This is not about proving yourself or fighting others. It’s about reclaiming vitality, building technical skill, and growing alongside other growth-minded adults in a supportive, ego-free environment.

What do I need to bring for my first class?

Just wear athletic clothes and bring water. We’ll provide the rest — including a loaner gi (uniform) if needed. You’ll be guided every step of the way.

Do I need experience?

None at all. Most of our students started with zero martial arts background. We love teaching beginners, especially adults who are ready to learn something new.

Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu in New Market is led by Professor Gabriel Retana, a black belt with over 18 years of experience in athletic training and movement science. He specializes in helping adults over 35 train smarter, move better, and build lasting strength. Our approach is inspired by the longevity, discipline, and technical mastery taught by Six Blades legends Xande Ribeiro, Saulo Ribeiro, and Rafael Lovato Jr. We offer a level of training and support you won’t find anywhere else in the area.

It’s practically individual instruction with between 5-10 students in most adult classes.
